Opportunities with Student Disability Services
Peer Mentor Program: The purpose of the SDS peer mentoring program is to help first-year students become knowledgeable about and comfortable with, the UTK campus, SDS, and college life in general by pairing them with a returning student who is also registered with SDS. The goal of the program is to assist students with their transition to college throughout the fall semester and to give them a sense of mattering and belonging within the University of Tennessee, Knoxville community.
Student Advisory Board: The SDS Student Advisory Board is established as a critical partner in reviewing these proposed modifications, to help ensure that SDS is doing what is in the best interest of the students we serve while following university policy and legal requirements.
Student Organizations
Advocates for Autism: Advocates For Autism aims to raise awareness and educate the campus and community about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We provide an inclusive environment for autistic students as well as serve as allies.
Best Buddies: Best Buddies UTK works directly with the Future program to create one-to-one friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.
C.A.R.E.: CARE stands for Creating Accessibility, Respect, and Education. This name reflects our mission as an organization to work hand in hand with administration, campus and community partners, and advocates to make UTK a better place for those with different abilities.
Deaf Hearing Alliance: We are a student-run organization whose goal is to educate people about the Deaf community, culture, and language in Knoxville and the surrounding areas. We welcome students to practice ASL and meet people who have similar interests regarding ASL and Deaf culture.
Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society: Delta Alpha Pi Honor Society presents an opportunity to change negative stereotypes by recognizing students with disabilities for their academic accomplishments. In addition, it facilitates the development of skills in leadership, advocacy, and education for participating students.
Disability Law Student Association: The mission of the Disability Law Student Association (DLSA) is to advocate for students with disabilities at the University of Tennessee College of Law, educate on the happenings in disability law as they occur, and assist in community outreach with other organizations at the College of Law or in the greater Knox County area, including but not limited to charity work, talks, and organizing events.
Neurocognitive Diversity Club: The mission of the Neurocognitive Diversity Club at UTK is to create a welcoming environment that celebrates diversity in neurocognition while promoting education, awareness, and utilizing positive psychology.
Pi Kappa Phi: Pi Kappa Phi is a national social fraternity with a strong emphasis on leadership, service, and brotherhood. The Ability Experience initiative focuses on serving individuals with disabilities through various programs and events.
Runway of Dreams: The mission of Runway of Dreams Foundation, national nonprofit, is to bring awareness to disability through a movement of inclusion, acceptance, and opportunity in the fashion industry and beyond. We celebrate people’s differences, break down stereotypes, and highlight the need for mainstream adaptive clothing.
Service Dog Club at UTK: Our mission is to create an inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with disabilities who rely on service animals to navigate their daily lives. Whether you are a student, staff member, or faculty, we welcome you to join our community and learn more about the incredible impact of service animals.
Student Government Association: The Student Government Association comprises students pursuing the betterment of this institution so that all members of the university community are beneficiaries of the opportunities and advantages available in an environment conducive to growth. SGA exists to provide the student body with a means to deal with the affairs of students and as a forum for the expression of student views concerning student life within the University. Everyone’s a member!
Type 1 Vols: Type One Vols is designed to educate, advocate, and coordinate the support of university allies to better prepare students as they navigate living with diabetes on a college campus, while creating service and philanthropic endeavors for all members.
Wheelchair Basketball Club: The purpose of the Wheelchair Basketball Club (WBC) is to provide educational and recreational opportunities to its members by promoting inclusion and creating awareness toward disability through wheelchair basketball.
