The purpose of the “pause exam or quiz time as symptoms occur” (PT) accommodation is to stop the testing clock to allow the student to take breaks if they experience disability-related symptoms. The student may need to step away from the exam or quiz to address their symptoms. The below table is a useful guide to determine how this accommodation may be implemented in the circumstances in which it will be necessary. In all cases, the student may need to start the exam at an alternative time to allow for breaks without interfering with their other classes.
How the exam or quiz is administered to the class

How the Pause Time accommodation should be implemented
- The instructor may provide and monitor breaks.
- The student may take the exam in SDS.
- Taken in class
- Online
- With a time limit once started
- The student may take the exam in SDS.
- A separate online exam without a time limit should be created so that SDS is able to manually monitor the time and allow for breaks.
- Taken at home
- Online
- With a time limit once started
- The student must receive 25% more time to complete the exam, they can take breaks if needed. This would be in addition to extended testing time if they are also approved for that accommodation. For example, a student with 50% extended testing time and the PT accommodation would receive 75% more testing time.
- No time limit once started, regardless of location or modality.
- The accommodation is typically not necessary
