Communication Access FAQs for Students

Transcripts are posted within 48 hours after the class in the Student Portal. For more information, review the instructions on accessing class transcripts.

The Coordinator will send an email to you via the Student Portal before the semester begins with the link to the transcript. All such email communication may be viewed by logging into the Student Portal and then clicking on My Mailbox on the left menu bar.  If you cannot find the correct link, email interpreting@utk.edu and ask.

The information about the service providers assigned to the class or event may be viewed via the Student Portal by clicking on Communication Access on the left menu bar.

Email interpreting@utk.edu as soon as you know of any changes in your schedule. For last-minute changes, text your service provider and the Coordinator.

Email interpreting@utk.edu as soon as you know your class is canceled.

If less than 8 hours before the class, send the Coordinator for Interpreting and Speech to Text Services (Heather Webb) a text message at the provided number and the service providers if you have their contact information. If more than 8 hours before the class/assignment, email interpreting@utk.edu and include the date and specific class you will not attend.

Text the interpreter/transcriber and the Coordinator for Interpreting and Speech to Text Services to let them know.  If they are notified you are coming, they will wait as long as it takes for you to arrive. If you do not contact them, they will wait 25% of the class time.

Student Disability Services creates schedules for students and interpreters based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to:

  • Assignment date/time and topic
  • Student communication needs
  • Interpreter availability
  • Interpreter skill and experience
  • Continuity of service
  • Interpreter’s prompt response to assignment requests
