Now that Paralympics has ended, how can it help grow adaptive athletics at Tennessee

Jason Scott remembers sitting on a bench outside of the University of Tennessee’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation building, thinking about the impact he could make.

Then a graduate student, Scott wanted to bring adaptive sports to Tennessee — creating opportunities for those with intellectual and physical disabilities. Seven years later in 2016, Scott returned to Tennessee holding a doctorate in recreation, park and tourism management with that goal still front of mind.

As Scott began his work, the program quickly began building momentum. He was an assistant professor trying to earn tenure and tread lightly, yet he had his department’s support.
